“This is what this 50th anniversary is all about, another opportunity to say to our Vietnam Veterans, what we should have been saying from the beginning; You did your job, you served with honor, you made us proud; so, here today it must be said, you earned your place among the greatest generations, … Welcome Home, Welcome Home, Welcome Home, Thank You, We Appreciate You, WELCOME HOME.”
President Barack Obama – Memorial Day, May 28, 2012
Oral history is a time-honored tradition, a means of passing knowledge from one generation to the next and an inherently valuable historical record. ‘Voices of War-Vietnam’ is intended to memorialize the accounts and experiences of our brave Vietnam veterans and the shared experiences of a nation at war. It is the universal nature of these experiences that will capture the attention of a national audience, veteran and civilian alike.
In 2009, the Voices of War production team successfully completed ‘Project Delaware-Voices of War-WWII’. In 2012, the Voices of War team, starting with Delaware, began producing the next in the Voices of War series: ‘Voices of War-Vietnam’. In Commemorative Partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, the ‘Voices of War-Vietnam’ Tour will travel to 50 states to conduct interviews with a minimum of 25 Vietnam veterans per state, creating a video collection of first-person interviews. The tour bus will serve as a mobile studio and as a rolling billboard, calling attention to the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, our collection of interviews, and highlighting our sponsors, on a grass roots level.
When the tour is complete, we will have the largest collection of Vietnam veterans’ interviews in the world. We plan to donate our collection to the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Fund, creators of the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Washington, D.C., for inclusion in their new Veterans’ Education Center, next to The Wall. Every interview, along with a transcription, will also be submitted to the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center, to be archived as part of the national Veterans’ History Project. These interviews and transcriptions will be available for use in classrooms throughout the U.S. The interviews will be edited into documentaries for potential broadcast.
As Vietnam Veterans are aging, it is crucial that we capture their first person accounts of the war, while we still can. We feel that our project properly tells the history, in a way that only those who were there can convey. This will do our veterans the justice they very much deserve. We need to ensure that the stories of the veterans who remain are recorded for posterity and the greater understanding of future generations.
