#PayUpPeabody Action Support

Peabody Energy, the world's largest private sector coal company, has declared bankruptcy, which means it can no longer pay its bills. This does not mean Peabody will cease to exist, it just means that a judge will decide which bills it needs to pay, and which creditors it can leave in the lurch. This means that vital payments like workers’ pensions or paying for land cleanup might just not happen, while the big banks and executive bonuses will most likely get paid out.

On Tuesday, April 19th, we stood up with Diné (Navajo) resistance community from Black Mesa, Arizona and people from Southern Illinois to respond to Peabody Energy's bankruptcy and demand a #JustTransition for frontline communities that have been devastated by Peabody's coal extraction. In St. Louis, we will do future actions, highlighting the ties between Peabody and the McKee family, Monsanto, and many others.

April 19th was a huge step, but the fight is not over until we have won justice for impacted communities, land, and workers.
