Bake a cake with a file in it for Susan!

California's "nonpartisan" Fair Political Practices Commission is pursuing me for up to $55,000 in fines for meaningless filing errors, like late-mailing the paper hardcopies of campaign finance reports that had already been filed electronically, in my first-time state campaign in 2013. (Yes, this election.)

I think this is an unreasonable and uncommon action against a first-time state candidate in an all-volunteer campaign that even the FPPC admits "substantially complied" with the law. It seems a bit odd for the state government to send its lawyers after a rookie candidate for inadvertent errors in redundant paperwork.

I'm fighting it, and I'm fighting it in full view of the public so California voters can see how this law operates and how it is enforced against people exercising their First Amendment rights.

If you'd like to help, the only legal way to do it is to donate to Committee ID #1355796 (Susan Shelley for Assembly, P.O. Box 6823, Woodland Hills, CA 91365). The FPPC has advised that "GoFundMe" types of accounts are not allowed. At this time, only the campaign committee may accept donations to pay legal expenses and enforcement penalties.

I can't thank you enough for your support and friendship. Your emails and good wishes have meant more to me than I can express.

Thank you again.

Yours,

Susan

Legal info: Donations made here go to the Susan Shelley for Assembly 2014 campaign committee (FPPC ID #1355796), which the FPPC has advised in writing may be used to pay enforcement fines for the 2013 campaign. "GoFundMe" and similar types of fundraising are not permitted. Because this is a donation to a campaign committee, I am required by law to ask for your name, address, occupation and employer. ("Retired" is both an occupation and employer, if that describes your current line of work.) With your permission, donations in excess of what's needed to pay fines or related legal expenses will be applied toward the campaign debt when this is all over. In accordance with the law, donations from any one individual totaling in excess of $8,200 to the 2014 Susan Shelley for Assembly committee ($4,100 for the June primary and $4,100 for the November general election) will be returned due to being over the campaign finance limit.
