Celebrating NINE Years!
Organizing Community Power!
1419 V St, NW Washington, DC 20009 (202) 234-9119
Dear Friend & Supporter:
We've come a long way and we're happy to say....
OUR NINTH YEAR HAS BEEN A YEAR OF FIRSTS!
AND ALL THIS WAS PART OF OUR WORK IN IVY CITY (WARD 5)! Citywide we have continued to TRAIN NEW LEADERS, ORGANIZE AROUND IMPORTANT ISSUES, and EMPOWER DC!
We're proud of what we have accomplished and hope that you are too! So proud that you will make a donation to support our work Organizing Community Power!
Empower DC is DC's only: Citywide, Inter-generational, Multi-Issue, Membership-based Community Organizing Project!
Our work transforms the soft-spoken into the out-spoken by providing opportunities for people directly-impacted by our issues to develop their confident ability to advocate for themselves! How do we do this? Through FREE monthly trainings on topics like "How DC Government Works" that reach hundreds of residents each year! And by building collective political power, bringing groups of people together who are directly impacted by issues like public education and affordable housing to form action plans and carry them out!
And, our Grassroots Media Project trains residents to document and tell the story of their community efforts through audio and video stories that are powerful testimonies to the strength and and the resilience of our community!
Empower DC is a leading voice against the misguided closure of DC Public Schools, without a study of the impact of previous closures, the magnitude of which threatens to undermine the very existence of public education as we know it! Over the past year we have alerted thousands of residents to the threat of school closures through grassroots outreach and community forums. Now our members are calling for a moratorium on closures and demanding that the Mayor and DC Council study the impact of closures on students and communities.
The focus of our housing work is now preserving at-risk public housing by helping public housing residents know their rights and have an organized voice to prevent their displacement!
This year we officially became inter-generational and began to incorporate youth voices into all of our campaigns. This has been especially powerful for the Child Care for All Campaign which now has a base of leaders from the teen parent program at Anacostia High School in Ward 8.
In all of our work, we hold government officials accountable by asking the question: who is benefiting from development? Our work builds the power necessary to ensure that low and moderate income residents in DC are heard, respected and included in the decision making process.
Community organizing is the only way to build political power for those who don't have the power of wealth and political connections. Our city government lacks peoples' champions, making it ever more important that those in power are regularly confronted by organized people, at their doors, demanding their rights!
The work of community organizers is long and hard, but we are tireless in our efforts. What keeps us going is the knowledge that we are all in this together.
If you support the work of Empower DC, please make a tax-deductible donation this year to keep it going! We don't take government or corporate money because we won't compromise our ability to hold the government accountable. Your donation makes it possible for Empower DC to continue Organizing Community Power!
On behalf of everyone at Empower DC, thank you for your support!
