Mama Hope has partnered with Liesl Spitz to build the Suubi (Hope) Women’s Reproductive Health Center in Budondo, Uganda. The Suubi (Hope) Women's Reproductive Health Center will offer accessible health care and counseling for women and children living in Budondo, and eight surrounding villages in Uganda.
My life changed the day I met members of the Budondo Intercultural Center in Uganda. For the first time, I saw community-based art in action: theater used to make tangible social change. This was a "light bulb moment" for me.... A year later, I came back to Uganda to learn more about the center, their history and vision. I got to know members of the organization closely - we sang, danced, and played theater games. That is when I learned about their newest project, the Suubi Women's Reproductive Center which will provide preventative health services along with educational and empowerment programs in order to reduce unwanted pregnancies, infant mortality, and malnutrition.
- Seeing their work was the spark to my focus at Stanford and my career aspirations in community-based art! I am returning this summer to visit once more, to assist with a girls' empowerment club that will bring esteem and education to young women of the village. But first..... To get their programs started, the Suubi Women's Center needs a building to house their medical services, counseling, and administrative needs! In order to make this happen, I have partnered with Mama Hope to raise $3,600 for the construction of the health center.
